UPDATE ON THE RETRO-FITTING OF HOMES 2017

Inis Mór: Comharchumann Fuinnimh has collected over 70 forms from homes on Inis Mor interested in having some work done in 2017. Not all of these can be done. We have chosen roughly 20 homes to submit for funding this year. The criteria used for choosing these homes were 1. longest time waiting; 2. most in need; 3. resident(s) over 70; 4. small children.

Inis Meain: 12 houses were surveyed and their names put on the grant application.

Inis Oirr: The list for Inis Oirr was submitted by Comhar Caomhán directly to the contractors Energy Wise Construction and did not come through Comharchumann Fuinnimh.

GRANT ELIGIBILITY (as of January 2017):
80% grant: households (even rented accommodation) with fuel allowance or family income support or Job Seekers Allowance with a child under 7 years.
50% grant: community buildings, publicly owned buildings, and registered charities.
45% grant: private homes that do not qualify for 80% grant.
30% grant: businesses (not including VAT).

GENERATING COMMUNITY OWNED ENERGY ON INIS MÓR

We continue to pursue the possibility of generating our own community-ownd energy from wind and solar on Inis Mór. Our feasibility study estimated that the energy needs of all 3 Aran Islands would be met by a generating capacity of 2.7 MW. One wind turbine is capable of delivering that power.

However, we are considering that two smaller wind turbines would be less obtrusive on the landscape, especially if they could be combined with solar power from photovoltaic panels. Following a number of public meetings over the last two years, we have set certain criteria for the ideal location of wind turbines on Inis Mór:

1. Not on a main tourist route on the island
2. Not obstructing the primary view of any resident of Inis Mor
3. Not within 500 metres of any home
4. Not in an area of visual beauty

We are also looking for suitable locations on the other two islands.
